Intern Introductions – Emilie Hoke

Intern Introductions - Emilie Hoke

This semester took many unexpected turns (for example, mandated quarantine and most of us leaving campus), but we still need to celebrate the hard work that our gallery interns put in this year. Some of them are even continuing to work for us remotely! Keep reading to get to know junior Emilie Hoke, one of the most passionate and involved art students here at Davidson.

Name: Emilie Hoke

Hometown: Raleigh, NC.

Major/Minor?: Studio Art and Environmental Studies double major .

Why did you intern in the gallery?: I love learning about art, and I wanted to gain exposure to an artistic career.

What has been your favorite memory from your job?: It’s so hard to choose just one–working with the galleries has provided such unique opportunities! I loved witnessing the installation of Yinka Shonibare’s Wind Sculpture (SG) I on campus. Other highlights including helping install exhibitions and learning about the collection.

Do you plan to pursue anything in the arts post-grad? If not, what are your plans?: I would love to be involved in a creative field in some capacity.

Favorite artist/work and why?: Olafur Eliasson’s “Your rainbow panorama” at the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Aarhus, Denmark–such an immersive and captivating large scale installation. I also enjoy artists who confront environmental narratives in their art, like Maya Lin and Teresita Fernández.

Hobbies?: Spending time outdoors, reading, and playing tennis.

Little known fact about you?: I love public transportation and biking! There’s a circular metro line in Copenhagen, and I once rode the entire line non-stop.

And finally, if you could have a meal with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?: Ben Rector; he’s one of my favorite musical artists!
