Sculptures I, 1974
Color Lithograph on Paper
11 x 22 in.
Gift of John Andrew MacMahon ’95
I picked this piece from ArtMate – the student art lending program – because I really love the colors and clean design. There’s something about the way it’s simple but unique composition caught my attention. Even though I’m not totally sure what it’s supposed to represent, it just looks interesting to me.
Every once in a while, when I look at it, I notice something new – a shape, a color, or a detail that I didn’t see before. That’s part of what makes it special to me. It’s not something you look at once and understand right away, it keeps you thinking and looking again. I like that kind of mystery in art, where you don’t need to have all the answers to still enjoy it. It reminds me that creativity and art doesn’t always have to make sense to be something you like.
I chose it in part because I wanted to have something I didn’t quite understand on my wall, something to make my room feel a little different from the rest of my stuff. I also like how the white background helps balance the whole piece. The design itself is busy, but the simplicity of the white space keeps it from feeling overwhelming. It gives your eyes a place to rest and makes the details stand out even more.
