Meet Toshaani Goel, one of the new interns on staff at the Van Every/Smith Galleries!

Toshaani Goel is a Sophomore at Davidson College from Chandigarh, India. She is a Global Literary Theory major and wanted to work in the gallery because she is very interested in art and thought it would be one of the best ways to invest herself further in it and to consistently challenge herself with alternate works, artists and philosophies. She believes there is no better place to do this than the art gallery and with each incoming exhibit, artwork and project, she hopes to immerse herself in the struggle of understanding it.

Learn more about Toshaani:

Who is your favorite artist?

“An evergreen answer is hard to give, but I think currently the answer would be Cornell Watson, a photographer from Weldon, United States. The layers in his work slowly unravel and by the end, I am blown away by the composition of the intricacies every single time. Some of his most iconic works, I think, are Egg Shells, The Kitchen Table Incident and the Allostatic Load (totally recommend to check them out!).”

What is your earliest memory of art?

“Art was just drawing and colouring for the longest time. I think my earliest memory of art in that context would be a drawing an okra and then eventually the iconic scenery of two mountains, a river in between, a house (with slanted roofs and two windows) of one side and a tree on the other.”

What is your favorite piece of art on campus?

“Poca High School and Amos Coal Power Plant, West Virginia by Mitch Epstein in VAC”

What is your favorite part about working in the art gallery so far?

“Just constantly being bombarded with crazy artworks and fulfilling projects”

What are you most excited to do in the art gallery or in art in general this semester?

“I am really looking forward to all the exhibits through the year at the gallery along with the Art in Residence Halls project (ArtMate- Look out for flyers soon!).”

Feel free to come chat with Toshaani or any of our other interns Mon-Friday 10-5 and Sat-Sunday 12-4.
