New Intern Introduction – Caroline Webster

Caroline Webster

Name and hometown?
Caroline (she/her). I’m from Lexington, VA.

Class year and major/minor?
I’m a senior English and Classical Studies double major.

Did you do anything this summer or during quarantine related to the arts?
I worked with a Davidson alum on a podcast she’s releasing this winter over the summer (art adjacent). I also did some work preparing to write my English thesis this year, which is poetry (art of a different kind).

Why were you interested in interning with the galleries?
I’m thinking about pursuing a career in arts administration in some capacity after Davidson and wanted to see what it would be like to work for a gallery! I care about making the arts accessible to everyone and hope to apply my English-major communication skills to that goal.

What role does art play in your life as a Davidson student? Do you see art playing a role in your life post-Davidson?
My roommate, Landin, is a visual artist (I’m pictured in the gallery with one of her Edgars). I’m a poet and work with language as my medium of self-expression, but I love love love going to student shows and talking to Landin and other friends about how they translate their worldviews and emotions into their own (visual) mediums. All art is cool! I know I’ll always feel that way.

Favorite sculpture on campus and why?
I like “You” (by Antony Gormley) because he looms. I identify with his posture (tense) and I’m jealous of his high-quality people-watching location.

Hobbies?
I sing a lot at school in the Chorale and with Androgyny a cappella!

Little known fact about you?
I took a bagpipe class when I studied in Scotland last fall (don’t be fooled: I cannot play the bagpipes).

If you could have a meal with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
Lord Byron. Heart-throb, drama queen, and egotistical genius.
