Intern Intro Series: Unique Summers

Summer 2019

Although many of the students working in the Davidson College Art Galleries major or minor in the arts, this is certainly not the case for everyone. Students from the Physics, Biology, English, and Environmental Studies departments are all represented on our intern staff. Two such exceptional interns are Paul Stouffer ’21 and Elizabeth Young ’20.

Paul, an Environmental Studies major, had two main occupations this summer – both somewhat food-related. First, he worked at a restaurant as a “pizza artisan” – not quite a pizza artist, but not too far off. Second, Paul spent time interning with a New York Times photographer in Maine, documenting the migration of lobsters due to climate change. Specifically, he worked on photographing the changing ecosystem and learning from locals about life in coastal Maine.

Elizabeth, a Biology major and French minor, spent her summer in Boston. There, she worked put her biology knowledge to work doing skin cancer research. Although Elizabeth did not work in the visual arts this summer, she pursued the performing arts by taking dance classes at various Bostonian studios.

Paul and Elizabeth are both returning interns at Davidson College Art Galleries, having seen many exhibitions come and go. Elizabeth has been here since her freshman year! She was first drawn to the Galleries because of her interest in photography and digital art. Now, she enjoys staying in tune with the arts scene on campus and exploring her artistic side, in contrast with the STEM major track. Elizabeth’s favorite experiences at the Galleries have both been related to exhibition installation. First, she loved setting up Yinka Shonibare’s exhibition last spring, shelving books without a precise order. Second, she enjoyed the satisfaction of getting to paint one of the gallery walls hot pink.

Paul’s favorite memories from the Galleries also include exhibition installation. He especially appreciates the diverse styles and perspectives featured in the Galleries, drawing inspiration from the plethora of artists represented. Beyond short-term exhibitions, Paul also enjoys finding “hidden gems” in the permanent collection.

Everyone at the Davidson College Art Galleries is happy to have Paul and Elizabeth returning for another year!
