SUMMARY:Lecture by Dr. John David Ike '13: The Visual Arts and Medical Education — Exploring the Intersection
DESCRIPTION:The arts and humanities are increasingly recognized as essential rather than peripheral to medical education across the continuum—from undergraduate studies to medical school and into the ongoing professional development of practicing clinicians. Reflecting the AAMC’s FRAHME report\, which positions the arts as vital to fostering flourishing\, perspective-taking\, resilience\, and professional identity formation\, art museums have emerged as dynamic laboratories for this work. \nWithin these spaces\, learners engage deeply with visual art to cultivate core capacities of medical practice\, including bias awareness\, close observation\, empathic imagination\, communication skills\, team collaboration\, and tolerance for ambiguity. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Ike will trace the historical and philosophical roots of the arts and humanities as integral to the healing professions and demonstrate how museums around the world are now being leveraged as innovative classrooms for developing the next generation of reflective\, compassionate physician leaders. \nExhibition and related programs made possible through the support of Bacca Foundation Visiting Scholar and Artist Program\, Public Lectures Committee\, and the McGaw Lecture Fund.

SUMMARY:Lunch-and-Learn: Beverly Fishman
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our current exhibition\, Alternative Medicine: Healing Remedies for Harmful Times\, join us for a casual conversation and lunch with the exhibiting artist\, Beverly Fishman. \nFishman has centered her work around the body\, investigating disease\, identity\, and medicine. She questions for-profit pharmaceuticals as the means for a cure\, and the manufactured promise of prescription happiness. Her glowing fluorescent and smooth matte forms correspond to specific pills as Fishman expertly illustrates the measured precision of an individual’s unique prescription. Geometric fragments are stacked into singular compositions; some segments rendered whole and others fractured to imply partial doses. Parenthetical titles reference the condition each component promises to treat — epilepsy\, pain\, depression anxiety\, insomnia\, even opiate dependency (a pill to treat a pill). \nBeverly Fishman (b. 1955\, Philadelphia\, PA) received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1977 from Philadelphia College of Art\, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1980 from Yale University. Fishman lives and works in Detroit\, MI.Exhibition and related programs made possible through the support of Bacca Foundation Visiting Scholar and Artist Program\, Public Lectures Committee\, and the McGaw Lecture Fund. \n  \nExhibition and related programs made possible through the support of Bacca Foundation Visiting Scholar and Artist Program\, Public Lectures Committee\, and the McGaw Lecture Fund. \n\n\nSpace is limited\, RSVP is required by Monday\, Feb. 9\, 2026\, 4 p.m. Click here to RSVP.
